Dear Sir or Madam,
I am looking forward to passing my master’s degree at the University of Leoben/Austria in the first quarter of 2023, majoring in Polymer Engineering. The only thing missing from my degree after the current semester is a master's thesis. As an ambitious student, I would like to rise above myself and take on the challenge of writing my thesis abroad at Spirit Aerosystems. Preferably in the context of an internship in combination with a master's thesis at a site in North America. My area of expertise includes the design, simulation, processing, and testing of composites. In addition, I am particularly seeking to deepen my technical knowledge in process engineering and quality management of liquid composite molding processes.
During the courses of my bachelor’s and master’s programs, I have studied several subjects and was involved in many projects related to design, simulation, and processing of composites in the industry as well as scientifically at the university. These include:
• My current work as a student researcher at the institute of processing of composites (University of Leoben).
o I oversee the process design and mechanical benchmarking of natural fiber composites in RTM and VARI processes.
o Focus is on the processability of biobased materials and influence of process and process configurations on mechanical properties.
• Developing a make-or-buy basis for decision-making on decorative parts of motorbikes for the board of directors of Motorcycle OEM “KTM AG”/Austria.
o The result was presented to the management as a multi-phase plan. The proposed solution was classified by the board as economically and technically very efficient.
o The implementation of 2 of the 3 phases, which should bring savings in the seven-digit range over five years, was approved by the board.
• Design and testing of an impact protection for fiber wound carbon pressure vessels at “Magna Steyr Fuel Systems”/Austria.
o I had to develop the desired product independently based on a specification sheet and had budget responsibility, had to select suppliers, and carry out and coordinate the series of tests.
o The product development was evaluated as successful by the company and will be scaled and used as a template for customer orders in the future.
• Impact simulation of a carbon pressure vessel including damage modelling.
o In the scope of my bachelor thesis, I simulated an impact loading on a carbon fiber reinforced type IV high pressure gas tank in the FEM program ABAQUS.
o Effects of applied stresses and strains were evaluated by means of a damage model and critical values were identified and validated against impact load tests.
• Carrying out a feasibility-check of dry carbon fiber winding with a downstream RTM process.
o Work included extensive literature research and experimental setup.
These projects and my studies led me to apply commercial software applications like SOLID WORKS, ABAQUS, HYPERMESH and MATLAB. Additionally, I do have some practice in data science in PYTHON and R. I have learnt and proven various aspects of experimental design and data evaluation in scientific research, starting from structured literature research, identifying key parameters, set up of experiments, process capability, monitoring to statistical evaluation of processes.
Due to my responsibility as the head of the student’s advocacy of the University of Leoben I had to lead teams and work in multiple groups as well as to solve issues with professors and other representatives of the university in a diplomatic and constructive manner. I take for granted, that working independently and focusing on the most important aspects of a bigger project is most efficient and mandatory for its success.
Starting from 2020 I became a scholarship holder of the “Delta Academy”. It is a highly selective program of the University of Leoben/Austria in deep cooperation with the University of St. Gallen/Switzerland for the promotion of prospective executives. I was able to receive expert training and gain practical experience in strategic management, controlling and leadership, in addition to my domain know-how. This interdisciplinary curriculum helps me to assess problems from different angles and find individual proper solutions.
If possible, I would like to start in September 2022. When it means to move to Republic of Korea, I would be happy to do so.
